History of AutoCAD

AutoCAD was initially released as a desktop app, running on computers with internal graphics controllers. Subsequent releases were for PCs with external graphics cards. Originally, AutoCAD ran on a Zilog Z80 processor at 3.07 MHz, with some early AutoCAD 2.5 releases running at 2.66 MHz.

AutoCAD was initially developed by Industrial Software Systems (ISS), with first release in December 1982 as version 2.5 for the Apple II. The first major release after ISS was Version 3, introduced in April 1980. It was primarily a rewrite of Version 2.5, based on a new graphical user interface (GUI). Version 3 supported external graphics cards for the first time, allowing designers to work on larger drawings at higher resolutions. It was also the first version to offer both 2D drafting and 2D and 3D modeling tools. (Future AutoCAD versions would include both 2D and 3D features.)

In October 1981, AutoCAD 4 was introduced, primarily as a professional upgrade to Version 3. It included a new GUI, increased text editing speed and features, and an internal matrix graphics library. Version 4 was also the first version to support Windows for the IBM PC.

In 1983, AutoCAD 5 was released. It included a new 3D feature called Sculpture, and several new 2D features including LensView. Version 5 was the first version to support Microsoft’s Disk Operating System (DOS). It also introduced the ribbon interface, with menu commands on the left and tools in the middle.

AutoCAD 6 was released in December 1986, a major upgrade for

The commercial version of AutoCAD allows inter-application interoperability. This allows for AutoCAD to be operated alongside other CAD software. (See Drawings, Interoperability.)

A number of tools can be run via the command line, including the Autodesk Data Management Application.

AutoCAD was originally developed by Sandia National Laboratories, and then Autodesk Corporation (now owned by a number of companies including Autodesk Inc., Merant, and Steelcase). In 2002, Autodesk acquired a number of companies that were creating applications that add to the functionality of AutoCAD. This included the popular, PostScript-based application «IdeaMax».

Software versions
Versions of AutoCAD are named by a year (e.g. 2002 version) followed by the two digit version number (e.g. 2002.9). Newer versions are released monthly. AutoCAD has a great deal of backwards compatibility between versions, and often new features and functionality are only added in later versions.

AutoCAD is available in a number of versions and is frequently updated to address new technologies and new products. The following is a partial list of versions of AutoCAD.

AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD LT/R
AutoCAD LT is the core architectural rendering software of the Autodesk portfolio and supports 2D and 3D architectural design and modeling. AutoCAD LT is based on DWG and DXF files. AutoCAD LT/R, (which stands for «Renderings,») is a rendering program which allows the rendering of 2D and 3D images and provides true color printing options.

Version 7.5: Release date June 2005.

Version 6.5: Released in June 2001. Supports extension and updates to the AutoCAD Standard User Interface, as well as additional drawing commands.
Version 6.0: Released in October 1997. Supports the DXF format, which is widely used in the CAD industry and now includes many additional features.
Version 5.5: Released in June 2001. Supports enhanced editing and printing features.
Version 5.4: Released in January 1997. Includes a number of large enhancements to the initial release of AutoCAD.
Version 5.1: Released in September 1996. Initial release of AutoCAD for Windows.

New tools for circuit design

Improve efficiency and productivity when creating electrical schematics with new options to create professional circuit layouts. Design without using pins or electrical symbols, simply use the familiar Block drawing tools. (video: 2:29 min.)

Create geospatial PDFs

Use ArcGIS Pro or 3D Builder to annotate, organize, and share your AutoCAD drawings in a geospatial PDF. The geospatial PDF enables full layers and viewing in 3D, as well as interactive annotations and zoom-in capabilities. (video: 2:29 min.)

Bevel options:

Improve the appearance of lines with new bevel options for the lines and polylines. ArcGIS Pro users can now control the angle of the bevel. Add bevels to lines and polylines or to a specific arc or polygon. (video: 2:29 min.)

Add shapes to tables and reference symbols

Add shapes to tables and reference symbols, such as circles, rectangles, and freehand. Save the shape as a text, shape, or table type to keep it in context. (video: 2:29 min.)

Ribbon options:

Use the options ribbon to display or hide the ribbon toolbar, to customize the layout of the ribbon toolbar, or to customize the ribbon appearance. (video: 2:29 min.)

New Subscription plans:

Take AutoCAD on the go with a mobile app. Switch between 2D and 3D views, including options to lock or unlock the 3D view, edit geometry, and capture and send drawings. (video: 2:29 min.)
