AutoCAD is a 2D vector-based CAD package, which means it uses lines and curves instead of 2D shapes for objects and data. With the user interface interface, the operator creates and manipulates objects that depict the geometry of a designed mechanical, electrical, architectural, or urban structure. The interface consists of a host of control panels, wizards and menus, each of which is accessed by clicking on icons displayed on the computer’s screen. Users can choose an object type (pipe, door, window, and so on), name the drawing, and assign it to a new drawing.
Each drawing also contains text, geometrical elements, dimensions, values, comments, labels, and other pieces of information that can be edited by the operator.
In the 1990s, AutoCAD became more popular with the introduction of the parametric, or model-driven, design approach. Model-driven design allows a user to create a component, such as a base, pedestal, or column, to design a building, and then create a model that describes its dimensions, such as the length, width, and height. The designer can manipulate the dimensions of the model, and the program displays alternative designs for each of the variable parameters. The parametric design can be used to increase accuracy by allowing designers to check that the results of the design are as expected.
AutoCAD is considered one of the most powerful and flexible CAD programs. It allows for the creation of 2D and 3D drawings, architectural and structural engineering, and GIS data.
AutoCAD originated in 1982, when a team of design engineers created a series of programs that produced some of the earliest computer-aided design (CAD) drawings on the Apple II computer. This set of programs was called «AcceDesign» and, after the team that created the programs was bought by a company called Scanning Systems Corp., it was renamed «AutoCAD» and was released for the Apple II and IBM PC/AT.
The first commercial AutoCAD release was released in December 1982. A PC version was released shortly after, allowing users to run AutoCAD on a desktop computer, rather than using a computer with an internal graphics display as in the Apple II version.
Since its introduction, AutoCAD has evolved into a sophisticated modeling, drafting, and presentation software package.

AutoCAD includes the capability to auto-detect the extent of objects, their relationships to other objects, and their tolerance of other objects (if tolerances are used). Basic Xrefs allows the user to perform basic queries over all objects with the Xref command, and to find specific objects using the Xrefs command.
Object Masters (or OMs) is a graphical representation of the components of the drawing. OMs, or object masters, are saved as.LMP files which are created in the application and stored in the Local History.
Object Desktop is a server application provided by AutoCAD and PowerViz which is used to access and modify 3D objects.
The following is a list of core functions which are available in AutoCAD:
PrintEngine has several functions which are different from Autodesk’s DesignCenter for printing and publishing in paper format, mainly being a server-based product and more readily available for web-based printing and publishing.
PrintEngine also includes the ability to set up local printers and print to cloud printers. There is also a Custom Page Layout (CPL) technology in which the user can create their own custom page layouts which can be either used in print or publishing directly.
Autodesk Design Vault is a web application designed for sharing data and ideas in a secure and controlled environment. It is accessible using the Autodesk mobile apps.
The Autodesk Training website offers courses and learning paths to help users advance their knowledge of the program.
AutoCAD 2000 was the first version of AutoCAD. The DOS version was released on 12 September 1995.
AutoCAD 2001 was released in May 1998. It offered a new look, task bar, and command-line mode.
AutoCAD 2002 was released in June 1999. It included numerous improvements to the user interface, such as undo buttons, continuous guides and split view.
AutoCAD 2004 was the first major overhaul of AutoCAD. Features included an updated Windows interface, a new flat design and improved professional-grade rendering tools.
AutoCAD 2005 was the first major release since AutoC
[App Path]\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2016.dll
32-bit: [App Path]\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2016.dll
64-bit: [App Path]\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2016_x64.dll
Start the autocad and then click on tools > Load packages.
Save the autocad package.
Press download key: R.
[1-12-2017] You may receive the error «Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004005» when trying to use the key.
Install the latest Update for Autodesk Autocad.
After installation of update, restart the autocad and try using the key again.
As suggested by @Sammons, the above method seems to work without giving any errors on Windows 10, but I get an error on Windows 8.
The Autocad version I downloaded is «Autocad 2016 for Windows» and it’s available for both 32 and 64 bit version.
I will try this version.
With the latest update of Autocad 2016, as the error states:
Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004005
It’s not longer needed to use the «Download key: R» as explained here.
Instead, just click on the «Autodesk AutoCAD» icon and the installer will start.
I’m assuming you’re on a 64-bit machine.
First, make sure you’re running the correct version. Click on Tools, then Options. Navigate to the About menu, and if it says «Autodesk AutoCAD 2016 16-bit or 64-bit» then you’re correct.
In that same menu, click on the Advanced tab. Make sure that you are using the 64-bit application.
Finally, after installing the 64-bit version, go to your AppData folder (usually C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming) and locate the «Autodesk AutoCAD 2016 16-bit» folder. Then, delete the folder (unless you have too much space on your hard drive, in which case, you’ll have to move it somewhere else) and start up Autocad again.
My advice is to not update your 64-bit package.
What’s New in the AutoCAD?
AutoCAD 2023 adds new paper markup functionality to enable you to quickly incorporate feedback from your customers and suppliers.
With AutoCAD’s new markup capability, you can quickly import graphic or text based feedback into your design. You can then add the imported feedback directly to your drawing, or incorporate the feedback into a new drawing based on your design.
To see a demonstration of the new functionality, view the video on this page.
Quick Start: Getting Started
Step 1: Download the new AutoCAD application and activate the Markup capability.
Step 2: Import feedback into the drawing, incorporating the feedback into the drawing, or create a new drawing based on your design
Step 3: Export and save the feedback as a new drawing or drawing fragment
Step 4: Publish and share your new drawing to GitHub.
Please note: The new Paper Markup is new functionality in AutoCAD 2020 and later. In 2020, CAD users who do not have the new AutoCAD application will be unable to use the Paper Markup features.
Background and History
Autodesk has supported paper-based feedback in Autodesk® AutoCAD® for many years, incorporating feedback into drawings in one of two ways:
You can import feedback from a paper drawing or paper-based drawing, or
You can import feedback from a file, such as a PDF or Word document, as shown in the image below.
In AutoCAD® AutoLISP® or Autodesk® Inventor® you would import feedback from a paper drawing or paper-based drawing by adding a «feedback comment» to the existing comment format. You would then integrate the feedback comment with the existing drawing by merging or copying it to the existing drawing. The feedback comment would exist as a comment with a numeric ID, referencing the original drawing.
When designing new drawings or building from an existing drawing, the feedback you collected from your customers would be incorporated into the drawing. The drawing or existing design would typically remain as a DGN (Drawing Granular Nested) file.
Your feedback comment would be directly incorporated into the drawing as a comment. The comment would then appear with the comment ID (generated by the software), with the date and time. The comment would also be attached to the object on which the comment was made.
The feedback comment could be added to the existing comment by right clicking on
